Timothy Babineau, MD, has been serving Lifespan in Providence, R.I., as president and CEO since Aug. 15.
As president and CEO, Dr. Babineau guides the system's strategic direction, builds upon its strong quality and safety programs and continues to focus on system integration to provide Lifespan patients with the best care experience. In addition, he is tasked with working to develop closer alignment between Lifespan and physicians to better meet the needs of patients and provide the most effective and efficient use of each healthcare dollar.
Prior to his appointment at Lifespan, Dr. Babineau served as president and CEO of Rhode Island Hospital in Providence and The Miriam Hospital in Providence. He began serving as CEO of Rode Island Hospital in 2008, and in 2010, when the two hospitals partnered he became CEO of both. During his tenure, Dr. Babineau oversaw the creation of the Norman Prince Neurosciences Institute at Rhode Island Hospital, the formation of the Lifespan Physician Group and the combined Rhode Island Hospital/The Miriam Hospital Cardiovascular Institute and Total Joint Center. Before serving Rhode Island Hospital and The Miriam Hospital, he served as senior vice president and CMO of the University of Maryland Medical Center and the School of Medicine in Baltimore.
Dr. Babineau also has broad administrative and academic experience. He is a professor of surgery at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University in Providence and was vice chairman of the division of surgery, surgical residency program director and director of the center for minimally invasive surgery at Boston Medical Center. He was also surgeon-in-chief and medical director for the Boston Medical Center Surgical Associates at Quincy (Mass.) Medical Center. He has been a trustee of the University of Massachusetts in Amherst and a member of its audit and finance committee. In x month, Dr. Babineau was named to Becker's Hospital Review's 100 Physician Leaders of Hospitals and Health Systems.
