Glenn Steele Jr., MD, PhD, joined Geisinger Health System as president and CEO on March 1, 2001. As president and CEO, Dr. Steele leads a health system recently recognized by Thomson Reuters as one of the 100 Top Hospitals. He has also led the hospital to achieve the MAP Award for High Performance in the Revenue Cycle from the Healthcare Financial Management Association. Geisinger has received the award every year since its creation in 2009.
Dr. Steele joined Geisinger after serving the University of Chicago as a Richard T. Crane Professor in the department of surgery, vice president for medical affairs, dean of the division of biological sciences and dean of the Pritzker School of Medicine. Prior to that, he held several leadership positions in Boston, including the William V. McDermott professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School, president and CEO of Deaconess Professional Practice Group and chairman of the department of surgery at New England Deaconess Hospital.
Beyond successfully leading Geisinger for more than 10 years, Dr. Steele is widely recognized for his investigations into the treatment of primary and metastatic liver cancer and colorectal cancer surgery. His medical investigations have focused on the cell biology of gastrointestinal cancer and pre-cancer. Most recently, he has concentrated on innovations in healthcare delivery and financing. A prolific writer, he is the author or co-author of more than 460 scientific and professional articles. Dr. Steele also serves on the editorial board of numerous prominent medical journals.
Dr. Steele is extremely active in the healthcare industry as a member of numerous associations. He is a member of the New England Surgical Society, the American Surgical Association, the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the Healthcare Executives Network. He is also a past chairman of the American Board of Surgery and a past president of the Society of Surgical Oncology. Dr. Steele has also served on many hospital and healthcare organization boards such as the boards of Bucknell University, Temple University School of Medicine, Premier Inc., Weis Markets Inc. and Wellcare.
In 2010, Dr. Steele received the 8th Annual American Health Association Health Research & Education Trust Award, which honors individuals who exhibit visionary leadership in healthcare and who symbolize HRET's mission of leveraging research and education to make a dramatic impact in policy and practice. In 2011, Dr. Steele was awarded the Healthcare Financial Management Association's Board of Directors' Award, which recognizes individuals or organizations for significant positive contributions to the profession of healthcare, the financing of healthcare services and benefits to society related to healthcare.
