Here are the IT leaders of U.S. News & World Report's top 10 children's hospitals for 2023-24, rankings that were unveiled June 21.
1. Marianne James, Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center
Ms. James serves as senior vice president and CIO. Since joining Cincinnati Children's in 2021, she has held positions in finance, physician services, practice management and IT.
2. Heather Nelson, Boston Children's Hospital
Ms. Nelson became senior vice president and CIO in 2021. She is responsible for collaborating with leadership and key stakeholders across the hospital to help chart its cybersecurity and EHR plans.
3. Myra Davis, Texas Children's Hospital (Houston)
Ms. Davis was appointed senior vice president and chief information innovation officer in 2019, having joined the hospital in 2002.
4. Shakeeb Akhter, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia
Mr. Akhter became senior vice president and chief digital and information officer in 2022. He is responsible for technology infrastructure, software applications, information services, cybersecurity and data analytics.
5. Matt MacVey, Children's National Hospital (Washington, D.C.)
Mr. MacVey serves as CIO and executive vice president. A former Cerner executive, he is responsible for enterprisewide IT strategy, cybersecurity and operations. Since joining Children's National in 2016, he has helped increase digital engagement technologies, uplift core enabling infrastructure, optimize provider EHR workflows and expand data-driven research platforms.
6. Denise Zabawski, Nationwide Children's Hospital (Columbus, Ohio)
Ms. Zabawski has been CIO since 2006. During her time at the hospital, she has led the implementation of multiple EHRs, enterprise resource planning systems and two new data center construction projects.
7. Conrad Band, Children's Hospital Los Angeles
Mr. Band was named senior vice president and CIO in April, having joined the hospital as chief information security officer in 2017. He is responsible for developing the legacy of information security, building infrastructure to align technology delivery and supporting enterprise operations.
8. Srinivasan Suresh, MD, UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh
Dr. Suresh joined UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh in 2014. He serves as vice president, CIO, chief medical information officer and a pediatric emergency physician. In his role as CIO, he is responsible for the hospital's EHR, data warehouse and advanced analytics initiatives.
9. Albert Oriol, Rady Children's Hospital (San Diego)
Mr. Oriol has been CIO since 2006. He previously worked in IT leadership for Children's Hospital Denver and Sarasota (Fla.) Memorial Hospital. He is also a vice president.
10. Richard Mendola, PhD, Johns Hopkins Children's Center (Baltimore)
Dr. Mendola joined Johns Hopkins Medicine and University as vice president and CIO in March. He had served in a similar capacity for Atlanta-based Emory Healthcare and University since 2005.
