Alphabet's life sciences arm Verily is joining forces with two Ohio health networks to build and operate a technology-infused rehabilitation center for patients struggling with opioid addiction, CNBC reports.
Kettering Health Network and Premier Health, both based in Dayton, Ohio, are helping Verily launch the center under a new nonprofit, dubbed OneFifteen. The goal is to develop a rehab campus that will offer inpatient and outpatient services and use a "variety of means" to treat substance abuse disorders, primarily using data-driven approaches to care, according to Verily.
"Because we will have facilities, an entire ecosystem and data, we'll be able to take a more holistic understanding of a person's health both inside and outside as we follow them long-term," OneFifteen CEO Marti Taylor, BSN, MSN — the former CEO of University Hospital and the Ross Heart Hospital at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus — told CNBC. "It's pretty unique being able to understand their care and advance evidence-based treatment."
Premier Health subsidiary Samaritan Behavioral Health will provide clinical care at OneFifteen, and Verily will provide the technology. It'll be an experimental effort, with Verily testing techniques by tracking patient adherence to treatment, provided they consent to being monitored, Danielle Schlosser, PhD, principal research scientist at Verily, told CNBC. The nonprofit's mission is to change how healthcare approaches behavioral health treatment, she added.
The clinic will start seeing patients in the spring of 2019, and plans to open the full campus by 2020.
