Routine maintenance caused an unexpected network outage at Chapel Hill, N.C.-based UNC Health hospitals on Jan. 31, which lasted about three hours.
"The issue was not related to malicious activity and our IT team is working with vendors to determine the cause," Alan Wolf, director of news and media relations at UNC Health, told Becker's.
All network UNC Hospitals were affected, and the hospitals went on ambulance diversion until the computer systems were restored around 10:30 p.m. EST on Jan. 31. The hospitals accepted walk-in patients during the outage and continued providing care.
"Our hospital staff's response to this situation was phenomenal," Mr. Wolf said. "They came together and continued to provide high level care to all of our patients. We applaud our nurses, physicians, pharmacists and other providers who work tirelessly to provide excellent patient care at all times."
