Top healthcare IT priorities and 9 more HIMSS Leadership Survey findings

A vast majority (72 percent) of healthcare leaders believe issues such as patient engagement, satisfaction and quality of care will have a major effect on organizational strategic efforts over the next two years, according to the results of the annual HIMSS leadership survey.

The 26th Annual HIMSS Leadership Survey includes responses from more than 330 participants and was conducted between Jan. 9 and Feb. 24. The survey examines key issues and trends impacting the healthcare industry.

Highlighted below are nine findings from the results of the HIMSS survey.

  • More than 80 percent of healthcare leaders consider IT to be a highly strategic tool at their organization.
  • Seventy-six percent of the respondents report their IT plan fully supports their overall business plan.
  • More than two-thirds (68 percent) of the leaders surveyed indicated IT has played a role in improving patient experience and working toward the goals of triple aim.
  • More than half felt IT has been reducing the cost of healthcare and improving population health (53 percent and 51 percent, respectively).
  • Seventy-nine percent of respondents indicated their organization's executive team is highly supportive of IT and 72 percent of respondents indicated their organization's board of directors is also on board with IT growth within their organizations.
  • IT is considered a critical tool for improving care coordination by 74 percent of the surveyed respondents.
  • Eighty-seven percent of respondents reported that their organization has provided a patient portal through which patients can access information.  
  • Almost two-thirds of respondents predict their organization will increase their IT operating budget in the next year.
  • Nearly half (49 percent) indicated that their organization expected to increase the number of IT staff at their organization in the same time frame.
