Survey: In Analytics, Data Variety More Challenging Than Volume

Data scientists largely agree it's the scope, rather than size, of big data that complicates analytics efforts.

In a Paradigm4 survey, 71 percent of data scientists polled said their jobs were being complicated by the increasing variety more than the increasing volume of data they have to work with. Half of respondents said they were having trouble fitting data from a growing number of sources into their relational database tables.

"The increasing variety of data sources is forcing data scientists into shortcuts that leave data and money on the table," said Marilyn Matz, CEO of Paradigm4, in a statement. "The focus on the volume of data hides the real challenge of data analytics today. Only by addressing the challenge of utilizing diverse types of data will we be able to unlock the enormous potential of analytics."
