A new Medical Group Management Association Stat poll reveals how healthcare organizations manage cybersecurity needs.
The July 18 poll surveyed 1,030 respondents and found nearly half (47 percent) of healthcare organizations use a mix of in-house resources and outsourcing to manage cybersecurity needs. Thirty-one percent of healthcare organizations said they manage cybersecurity needs completely in-house, and 21 percent said they completely outsource these needs. Only 1 percent said "other" when asked how their organization manages cybersecurity needs.
Many poll participants attributed their combined use of in-house and outsourced resources to the fact not all cybersecurity needs can be adequately addressed by internal staff, according to MGMA.
"For larger organizations, security is more likely to be managed entirely in-house. Many respondents whose organizations manage all cybersecurity needs in-house said they were part of a hospital system or other large organization," MGMA added.
Based on the poll results, MGMA Government Affairs recommends "conducting a HIPAA Security Risk Assessment as well as regular penetration tests."
