Stolen camera may have exposed photos from Loyola Medicine autopsy patients

Maywood, Ill.-based Loyola University Medical Center confirmed that a stolen camera stored the autopsy photos of 18 patients, according to CBS Chicago.

Only nine patients had their autopsy photos uploaded into Loyola Medicine's electronic medical files. The other nine files that were not uploaded are a breach in the Illinois Department of Public Health's policy.

Loyola Medicine employees said the camera didn't come with a cable to allow them to upload the images onto the EMR. A spokesperson from Loyola Medicine told CBS Chicago that the hospital is taking steps to ensure an incident like this doesn't happen again.

The Illinois Department of Public Health confirmed that Loyola Medicine is now in compliance with its policies. The hospital also reported the incident to HHS' Office for Civil Rights.
