The State of Franklin Healthcare Associates filed a police report Feb. 2 reporting a potential data breach affecting employees.
The system in Johnson City, Tenn., is working with the police to investigate the breach, which has affected at least four employees, according to WJHL. The affected data came from the system's payroll system, including W2s and demographic information. Several employees reported identity theft issues when they attempted to file taxes and found that someone else had already fraudulently done so.
"This breach of security was reported to us by our third party payroll vendor," said State of Franklin Healthcare Associates CEO Richard Panek in a letter to employees. "We do know that the cyberattack was contained to only employee payroll information and at no time was any patient data compromised."
The letter said the healthcare group is taking palliative action to prevent data breaches in the future and included information from the Internal Revenue Service about how to identify signs of identity theft.
