San Francisco-based First Opinion, a mobile app that connects patients to practicing physicians via text, announced it raised $6 million in Series A funding in December to expand its physician network and grow its infrastructure.
The app allows patients to send questions and photos of symptoms to physicians via text message. Patients are paired with the same physician every time and receive an answer in five minutes or less. The First Opinion physicians do not send diagnoses, but help patients determine if they need to make an appointment.
Last year, more than 100,000 consultations were provided through the app, according to a company statement. The physicians cover a range of specialties, including family medicine, dermatology, pediatrics and emergency medicine, among others.
Polaris Partners led the investment round. Investment to date in First Opinion is $8.6 million, including the company's $2.6 million in seed funding.
