MU hardship exemption deadline is July 1

Eligible hospitals and professionals participating in the meaningful use program who want to apply for the hardship exemption have until July 1 to do so.

In December President Barack Obama signed into law legislation offering exemptions for any participant in the meaningful use program to avoid payment penalties in 2017.

Providers applying for an exemption only need to select a hardship category and provide identifying information. No additional documentation is required, and CMS will not review any documentation provided.

Previously, providers had to submit supporting documentation if seeking an exemption, and CMS granted exemptions on a case-by-case basis. Now, any provider can apply for an exemption.
