Critical access hospitals are making great strides in health IT adoption, with 89 percent implementing either a full or partial electronic health record, according to a study in Health Affairs.
The study examined a HIMSS survey of CAHs conducted between November 2012 and April 2013. In addition to EHR implementation, the study identified seven additional areas of health IT growth for CAHs.
Teleradiology
Have capability: 70 percent
Plan to have capability within one year: 9 percent
Telehealth
Have capability: 59 percent
Plan to have capability within one year: 6 percent
E-precribing
Have capability: 50 percent
Plan to have capability within one year: 34 percent
Health information exchange
Have capability: 49 percent
Plan to have capability within one year: 33 percent
Electronic submission of discharge summaries
Have capability: 38 percent
Plan to have capability within one year: 40 percent
Patients have access to information after discharge
Have capability: 15 percent
Plan to have capability within one year: 50 percent
