Lifespan goes live on Epic EHR

Providence, R.I.-based Lifespan is now live on Epic's EHR platform, according to a Rhode Island Public Radio report.

The new system, dubbed LifeChart, includes a patient portal, a provider portal to access patient records through the Lifespan network and an electronic data sharing platform that connects to outside facilities and systems that are also using Epic's EHR platform, according to the Lifespan website.

Lifespan announced its intent to implement Epic's EHR in March 2013, with an expected project cost of $90 million. According to previous reports, the installation project severely affected the health system's cash flow and credit score. In the RIPR report, John Murphy, MD, executive vice president of physician services at Lifespan, said the system hopes to gain back some of the capital spent on the investment through more efficient billing and less unnecessary treatment.
