IU Health develops app to help physicians search patient data

Indianapolis-based Indiana University Health has created an app for emergency department physicians that is designed to reduce the time it takes to retrieve information about a patient.

The university built the CareView app in partnership with Regenstrief Institute, Indiana Health Information Exchange and Indiana University School of Medicine.

To use it, clinicians select the condition that a patient presents when they visit the hospital. The app will connect to the Indiana Network for Patient Care and the Indiana Health Information Exchange. The app will then retrieve the patient's test results, notes and other information that is relevant to their condition.

"There is an incredible amount of information available for most patients, but sifting through all of it to find the most crucial data can be very time consuming," said Titus Schleyer, DMD, PhD, a research scientist at Regenstrief and professor at IU School of Medicine. "Clinicians could spend three to five minutes searching for data in a patient's record. CareView cuts that time to less than 10 seconds, freeing up more time to interact with the patient."

Currently, the app helps clinicians who are treating patients with chest pain, abdominal pain, headaches, weakness and dizziness, back pain, pregnancy, heartbeat irregularities and trouble breathing.
