One Florida health system CIO was able to grow his team throughout the pandemic amid labor challenges by emphasizing the organizational mission to his team, CIO.com reported March 14.
David Reis, PhD, CIO at the University of Miami Health System and Miller School of Medicine in Florida, spoke to CIO.com about making employee retention and recruitment a priority during the pandemic.
Dr. Reis ensures that he strengthens the connection between the mission of the health system and the work the IT department does. He holds monthly town hall meetings with his department and stresses the value and importance of the IT department's work in creating a secure, user-friendly experience.
He also told CIO.com that his employees are often patients too.
"Our families are getting care here, so we can tie that to how new technology directly impacts them," he said.
During the pandemic he was able to recruit and retain new employees, despite the ongoing challenge of the Great Resignation. He credits some of this to the mission-driven spirit of those working in healthcare.
"There’s power in the work, and in understanding the value that the work brings to our local community," he told CIO.com.
