Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey is notifying approximately 839,711 members that two unencrypted laptops containing members' personal and health information were stolen from the insurer's Newark, N.J., headquarters.
The theft occurred during the weekend of Nov. 1, and authorities were notified Nov. 4. An internal review found the laptops contained varying amounts of member information, including names, dates of birth, addresses, Social Security numbers and some clinical information. Horizon BCBSNJ officials do not believe the laptops were taken in order to access member information.
Horizon BCBSNJ is strengthening its laptop encryption process and enhancing policies, procedures and staff education regarding information and property security.
