HHS, HIMSS Collaborate on Patient Data Matching Strategy

HHS and HIMSS have partnered to hire an "Innovator in Residence" to develop a plan for deploying a patient-matching strategy based on existing best practices and input from ONC and healthcare stakeholders.

Hired through HHS' existing Innovator in Residence program, the new innovator will be a HIMSS employee who will serve his or her two-year term onsite at the office of HHS' chief technology officer. In addition to focusing on a short-term deployment of a patient-matching strategy, the IIR will also asses the long-term applicability of identity management methods used in healthcare and in other industries.

"HIMSS is honored to work with HHS on this initiative, said Lisa Gallagher, vice president of technology solutions at HIMSS, in a news release."To improve the quality and safety of patient care, we must develop a nationwide strategy to match the right patient to the right record every time.  The IIR will create a framework for innovative technology and policy solutions to help provide consistent matching of patient health records and patient identification.  We look forward to collaborating with HHS to find the optimal candidate for this opportunity."
