Federal Agencies Unprepared to Work with Big Data, Study Finds

MeriTalk has announced the results of a new study that found the majority of federal agencies focused on healthcare research and care delivery are not yet taking steps to prepare their agencies to work with big data.

The new study entitled "The Big Data Cure" surveyed federal executives focused on healthcare and healthcare research to examine the current state of big data in federal healthcare.

Although the majority (59 percent) of the executives surveyed say in five years fulfilling their agency's mission objective will depend on successfully leveraging big data, the numbers show few agencies are currently taking the necessary steps to handle the influx of data.

The study made the following findings:

  • Fewer than 20 percent of federal healthcare executives say their agency is very prepared to work with big data.
  • 34 percent of agencies have invested in IT systems to optimize data processing.
  • 29 percent of agencies have trained IT professionals to manage and analyze big data.
  • 29 percent of agencies have educated senior management on big data issues.

"The Big Data Cure" was based on an online survey of 150 federal healthcare executives.
