Analytics continued to drive digital health VC funding in 2018, report finds

Global venture capital funding in digital health reached $9.5 billion in 2018, with funding for data analytics startups contributing $2.1 billion, according to a report by market research firm Mercom Capital Group.

Digital health VC funding — which spanned 698 deals in 2018 — rose 32 percent from the $7.2 billion in 778 deals the sector raised in 2017. In 2017, funding related to data analytics comprised $1.1 billion.

Since 2010, digital health companies have generated $35 billion in VC funding in more than 4,000 deals, as well as almost $12 billion in debt and public marketing financing, bringing the sector's cumulative funding total to $47 billion.

The top digital health categories, as ranked by amount of VC funding received in 2018:

1. Analytics: $2.1 billion
2. mHealth apps: $1.3 billion
3. Telemedicine: $1.1 billion
4. Mobile wireless: $847 million
5. Clinical decision support: $714 million
6. Wearables: $703 million
