500M People to Use Mobile Health Apps by 2015

A report published by research2guidance projects that 500 million people will be using mobile health applications on their smartphones by 2013, according to a Healthcare IT News report.

The study, titled "Global Mobile Health Market Report 2010-2015," covers three key market dimensions, including the smartphone market, the current state of mobile health smartphone applications market and the mobile health outlook for 2015.

The report also suggests that patients as well as healthcare professionals are taking advantage of smartphones, including for continued medical education purposes, remote monitoring and healthcare management applications.

There are currently more than 17,000 mobile health applications in major app stores, with 74 percent of those applications adhering to the paid business model. The report suggests that with more healthcare providers joining the mobile applications market, the business models will eventually include healthcare services, sensor, advertising and drug sales revenues, according to the report.
