5 Steps to Manage Mobile Devices, Safeguard Patient Health Information

As part of its new education initiative around mobile health security, HHS has provided five steps to help healthcare organizations develop and implement mobile device policies and procedures to safeguard patient health information.

These five steps can help organizations manage mobile devices in a healthcare setting:

1. Decide. Decide how mobile devices will function in the healthcare setting. For instance, will they be used as part of the organization's internal networks and systems or to access, transmit and store patients' health information?

2. Assess. Assess how mobile devices increase threats and vulnerabilities to the health information of the organization.

3. Identify. Identify the organization's risk management strategy, including privacy and security safeguards, for mobile devices.

4. Develop, document and implement. Develop, document and implement the organization's mobile device policies and procedures to safeguard the health information.

5. Train.
Conduct mobile device privacy and security awareness training for providers and professionals.
