Friday feel good: Dreamgirls cast performs for VCU Medical Center patients

A dose of feel good to kick off the weekend.

Desiree Roots is a cast member in Dreamgirls, which is currently running at Richmond-based Virginia Repertory Theatre. On Wednesday, she made a longtime friend's dreams come true, reports WTVR.com.

Ms. Roots' friend, Earl Fleming, is currently a patient at Richmond-based VCU Medical Center. Mr. Fleming, whom she met at age 13 as a cast member in The Wiz, is awaiting a heart transplant. "He has literally been a part of my life ever since then. And he's family," she said, according to the report.

Together with VCU Medical Center staff, Ms. Roots and her fellow cast members coordinated a surprise performance for Mr. Fleming, who didn't know it was coming. "You just don't know. [I'm] just so glad and excited because we go way back," he said, according to the report. "I'd like to thank the cast and thank the hospital. This has been a day."

The Dreamgirls cast also sang for a few other patients.
