Why Kaiser's Risant Health set up base in DC

Kaiser Permanente's Risant Health is headquartered in Washington, D.C., sharing half of an existing 4,200-square-foot office with the Oakland, Calf.-based system's government affairs team, the Washington Business Journal reported Aug. 6.

Risant CEO Jaewon Ryu, MD, told the news outlet that the nonprofit wanted "an East Coast hub in the heart of the mid-Atlantic." He also said the Washington area is "an access point into talent pools of people that are used to thinking about health care differently," which, he said, is what Risant is setting out to do.

Kaiser Permanente announced the creation of Risant Health and plans to acquire Danville, Pa.-based Geisinger — where Dr. Ryu served as CEO — in April 2023. Risant's aim is to expand and accelerate the adoption of value-based care in "diverse, multi-payer, multi-provider, community-based health system environments."

The deal to acquire Geisinger closed March 31. In June, Risant announced plans to acquire Greensboro, N.C.-based Cone Health. That transaction is pending.

Dr. Ryu told the Journal that to date, Risant has been relying on internal Kaiser staff that were involved in the creation of the nonprofit, as well as Geisinger and Cone employees. He said he expects Risant to hire more staff over time.

Risant named Bryce Bach CFO in July. Dr. Ryu said there are no impending plans to add more C-suite executives.

Dr. Ryu told Becker's that its new value-based care platform will be rolled out at Geisinger by the end of the year.
