UPMC Pinnacle closes hospital: 4 things to know

UPMC Pinnacle closed its hospital in Lancaster, Pa., on Feb. 28.

Four things to know:

1. The Harrisburg, Pa.-based health system announced plans in December to close UPMC Pinnacle Lancaster and transition inpatient services to UPMC Pinnacle Lititz (Pa.). The two hospitals are about 7 miles apart.

2. The Lancaster hospital phased out services over several weeks before shutting down. On Feb. 15, the hospital stopped accepting direct admissions from physicians. EMS and ambulance services stopped bringing emergency patients to UPMC Pinnacle Lancaster on Feb. 23.

3. Roughly 70 percent of the hospital's employees secured new jobs within the UPMC Pinnacle System, according to a Feb. 15 news release.

4. "We look forward to combining the strengths of our outstanding patient care teams and bringing all our inpatient programs to one campus making care more convenient for patients," UPMC Pinnacle President and CEO Philip Guarneschelli said in the news release.
