UnityPoint cuts operating loss in Q1

West Des Moines, Iowa-based UnityPoint Health posted a $3.1 million operating loss in the first quarter of 2024, an improvement from the $29 million operating loss it posted in the same quarter in 2023, according to its May 28 financial report. 

The system saw total operating revenues of $1.2 billion for the three months ended March 31, according to the report. That's up from total operating revenues of $1.1 billion in the same quarter last year. Patient service revenues increased 12.8% year over year to $1.1 billion. 

Total operating expenses were $1.2 billion for the quarter, up from $1.1 billion over the same period in 2023. Salaries and wages increased 1.6% to $443.2 million. Supply expenses rose 8.8% to $241.2 million. Other expenses increased 39.2% to $193.9 million.

 Net income for the quarter was $70 million, compared to $69.9 million in the same quarter last year.
