Trinity outsourcing some physicians at Connecticut hospitals

Trinity Health of New England is transitioning the employment of more than 100 physicians at its Connecticut hospitals to Vituity, a physician-owned medical group headquartered in California.

Vituity, which has more than 500 practice locations across multiple states, will manage emergency medicine and hospitalist medicine services at the health system's three acute care hospitals in Connecticut, Trinity said in a statement provided to Becker's.

The hospitals include: St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, St. Mary's Hospital in Waterbury and Johnson Memorial Hospital in Stafford Springs.

"Vituity has a proven track record of success in partnering with hospitals and health systems to improve access to care, hospital throughput and patient experience," the health system said in a statement. "In fact, Vituity has been a trusted partner to Trinity Health for 15 years, serving ministries in 9 states."

Trinity recently informed more than 100 emergency room and hospitalist physicians of a 90-day notice for them to shift their employment to Vituity under risk of otherwise losing their jobs, according to state Sen. Saud Anwar, MD, chair of the Public Health Committee.

Dr. Anwar said in a Jan. 9 statement that he is "alarmed" by the decision due to its potential effect on care quality and physician retention levels "amid an already-stressed environment for medical staffing in Connecticut."

He has called on Trinity to unwind the partnership.

"Our state is already experiencing a severe shortage of physicians and this decision by Trinity threatens the state's efforts and efforts of all the healthcare systems to recruit and retain physicians," Dr. Anwar said. "Not only would the loss of these physicians directly impact the patients receiving care from them — likely creating even more demand amid limited supply Connecticut — but it risks a 'brain drain' effect, where these talented workers, who have been established in our state for years and even decades, are forced to move elsewhere for employment… Trinity should make decisions in the best interests of public health in our state, not their bottom line."

Trinity said it is "fully committed" to retaining its emergency medicine and hospitalist medicine providers and "collaborating with them to ensure the continued delivery of exceptional care across our ministries in Connecticut."

Vituity has been a partner to Livonia, Mich.-based Trinity Health for 15 years, serving ministries in nine states, according to the health system.
