South Shore Hospital, a 136-bed safety-net hospital in Chicago, is facing financial challenges and plans to cut salaries by 10 percent and lay off workers to stay afloat. The financial pressure is largely attributable to a growing backlog of unpaid Medicaid claims, which have almost doubled since mid-2014.

4. Moody's: 3 ways the GOP tax bill will hurt nonprofit hospitals
The tax overhaul plan President Donald Trump signed into law last week has negative credit implications for nonprofit hospitals and health systems, according to Moody's Investors Service.

5. Texas reaches $25B deal with feds to extend funds to safety-net hospitals
Top Texas leaders entered an agreement with the federal government that extends the life of the state's Section 1115 Medicaid waiver. The deal extends Texas' waiver for another five years, and will provide the state with about $25 billion to care for lower-income and uninsured people at its nonprofit and county-owned hospitals.
