Sacramento, Calif.-based Sutter Health reported a $224 million operating surplus for the first nine months of 2014, a significant increase over the $18 million operating deficiency the system recorded for the same period of last year.
The nonprofit 24-hospital system's operating revenue growth remained nearly flat, increasing from $7.23 billion in the first nine months of 2013 to $7.24 billion for the same period this year.
Sutter Health managed to lower some of its expenses during the first nine months of the year, including those associated with purchased services and insurance. However, some of its expenses grew in the first nine months of 2014 such as the system's supplies costs.
After accounting for a loss on the system's investment income, Sutter Health reported a $228 million total surplus for the first nine months of 2014, up from a $198 million surplus for the same period of 2013.
