South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside, N.Y., is almost halfway to its goal of raising $10 million to help fund the expansion and redesign of the hospital's emergency department.
Since the campaign began in 2015, the hospital's supporters have donated about $3.4 million and pledged an additional $364,731 and secured grants of $500,000, according to a news release.
The donations will help fund the $57 million cost of expanding the emergency department.
The 35-bed emergency department is the only level II trauma and regional stroke center on the South Shore of Nassau County. The department currently sees some 65,000 patients a year, but was designed to handle just 35,000 annually.
The expansion project will nearly double the size of the emergency department, allowing staff to treat in excess of 70,000 patient visits annually. The project calls for a larger waiting area and dedicated treatment spaces for behavioral health, geriatric and pediatric emergencies.
