Federal officials' recent announcement that 13 percent of people have fallen off Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act healthcare plans highlights the stakes for the looming U.S. Supreme Court case King v. Burwell, according to The Hill.
A decision in the case, which challenges healthcare insurance exchange subsidies for individuals who obtain health insurance through the federally-run exchange, is expected by the end of June.
Here are three things to keep in mind about what is at stake in the case, according to the report.
1. If the high court rules in favor of the plaintiffs, it would eliminate PPACA subsidies for 6.4 million people in the 37 states using the federal marketplace.
2. The 10 states with the most people receiving tax credits are on the federal exchange, the report notes.
3. In Mississippi, Florida and North Carolina about 94 percent of people are receiving subsidies that are at risk in the case.
