Renovo, Pa.-based Bucktail Medical Center is closing its long-term care facility May 14.
Bucktail said in a March 13 news release that like many rural hospitals, it "has been grappling with challenging fiscal issues over the past decade." CEO Laura Murnyack, BSN, RN, said officials explored options to keep the facility open, but "its increasing costs severely undermine Bucktail’s fiscal position."
Board president John Lugg said the hospital is partnering with Pittsburgh-based UPMC and other providers to "support the transition of care and find transfer placements into the best available care for these residents."
The closure will result in an unspecified number of staff layoffs, but Bucktail said it is intending to place some of the affected staff into open positions and is working with its healthcare partners to help identify positions for the displaced workers, according to the release.
