COVID-19-related expenses and lost revenue reported by Pennsylvania hospitals and health systems from January 2020 through December 2022 totaled $8.1 billion, according to a report published Jan. 11 by the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council and the Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania.
Of the $8.1 billion, labor costs incurred were $1.3 billion. the largest expense reported. The $1.3 billion labor cost includes increased staffing and labor expenses as a result of the pandemic, acquiring additional staff resources to expand or maintain access to care and staffing emergency operation centers, as well as costs related to COVID-19 training for providers and staff.
Below is a breakdown of total COVID-related expenses for Pennsylvania hospitals from January 2020 through December 2022:
- Staffing: $1.3 billion
- Testing: $374 million
- Supplies and equipment: $679 million
- Construction: $28 million
- Housing care: $9 million
- Other: $434 million
- Revenue loss: $5.3 billion
