Northwell Health agrees to invest $138M, save 6,800 jobs to lower its energy bill

Nine facilities owned by New Hyde Park, N.Y.-based Northwell Health are participating in New York's ReCharge NY Program, which supplies low-cost, clean hydroelectric energy in exchange for pledges to make $138 million in capital improvements and retain 6,800 jobs.

To receive the seven-year ReCharge contracts, companies must apply. The money will go toward retaining jobs, along with $95 million for building upgrades for five Long Island facilities and $43 million for similar upgrades at four New York City facilities.

“Under the ReCharge NY program, we can purchase an allocation of lower-cost power from the New York Power Authority in exchange for making a commitment to retain jobs in New York state,” said Frank Porretto, energy manager at Northwell Health. “Also, because most of the power is generated from hydroelectric sources, Northwell’s carbon footprint is reduced. So it’s a win for Northwell, the economy and the environment.”
