Mount Sinai Beth Israel ending stroke, cardiac services amid hospital closure plans

New York City-based Mount Sinai Health's Beth Israel campus will end its stroke and cardiac services March 10 due to voluntary staff departures since the planned closure of the hospital was shared in September.

The hospital's planned closure date of July 12 was blocked by a New York judge in mid-February until closure arguments can be presented in court.

"These departures have increased in recent weeks, including critical positions which we simply cannot replace, which is creating significant staffing challenges," a Mount Sinai spokesperson said in a statement shared with Becker's

The hospital's fire department ST-elevation myocardial infarction center designation and its Joint Commission stroke certification are set to expire March 10, but the hospital will not renew the designations.

"Should any cardiac or stroke patient present to the MSBI emergency department, they will be treated, stabilized and transferred to another Mount Sinai or area hospital that is certified in such care or to a hospital of the patient’s choice," the statement said.

The Fire Department of the City of New York has been made aware of the service changes.

"The safety of our patients has been — and will always remain — our top priority and the driver of all of our decisions and we cannot provide services that are not properly and safely staffed," the statement said.
