Massachusetts hospital shuttered by fire to reopen in August

Brockton (Mass.) Hospital, owned by Brockton-based Signature Healthcare, has shared plans to reopen Aug. 13 after an electrical fire closed the hospital in February 2023.

The fire started in an electrical equipment room and required the hospital to shut off its utility power and emergency generators to put out the flames. Emergency crews worked with hospital nurses, physicians and staff to evacuate and transport 162 patients safely without injury.

The hospital had initially planned to reopen in late spring 2024 but has been working to replace its infrastructure and enhance the facility, according to an Aug. 6 news release shared with Becker's

Updates to the hospital include a new outpatient surgical facility, a new main lobby, an updated emergency department with a 12-unit behavioral health triage, solar power installation and two cardiac catheterization machines.

The hospital's maternity unit — including labor and delivery — pediatric unit and behavioral health unit will remain closed.
