Iowa hospital closes behavioral unit

Des Moines, Iowa-based MercyOne has closed the behavioral health unit at its Clinton (Iowa) Medical Center, NBC affiliate KWQC reported Oct. 2.

The unit was mainly staffed by social workers, the outlet reported, and patients were not able to receive the full spectrum of care. Patients could only meet with psychiatrists via video call, Angela Ganzer-Bovitz, director of behavioral health for MercyOne in Eastern Iowa, told the station.

The lack of care options led to the decision to close the unit, Ms. Ganzer-Bovitz told KWQC.

Patients presenting with a behavioral health crisis at the emergency department at Clinton Medical Center will be transported to nearby inpatient units, Ms. Ganzer-Bovitz said.

MercyOne is part of Livonia, Mich.-based Trinity Health.
