La Crosse, Wis.-based Gundersen Health System took home the Healthcare Financial Management Association's Richard L. Clarke Board of Directors Award for the system's end-of-life planning program.
The award, HFMA's highest recognition, honors Gundersen's Respecting Choices program. The program delivers patient-centered advance care planning for those nearing the end of their lives. Developed more than 30 years ago in 1986, Gundersen has since expanded the program across 130 health systems and medical centers worldwide. HFMA said the program fulfills the triple aim by improving patient care and population health while lowering costs.
"Gundersen's innovations in advance care planning have revolutionized the field," said HFMA President and CEO Joseph J. Fifer. "By aligning patient choices with medical care they receive at the end of life, Respecting Choices has facilitated the delivery of high-value healthcare to patients and communities nationwide and beyond."
