CMS cut off Medicare funding and imposed an approximately $63,000 penalty to Hollywood, Fla.-based Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills where 14 residents died after the facility lost power when Hurricane Irma made landfall in the state, according to the Miami Herald.
The facility was dropped from the Medicare program Friday due to "[its] failure to meet Medicare's basic health and safety requirements," according to CMS' termination notice.
CMS additionally imposed a $20,965 penalty per day for the three days that the nursing home failed to evacuate its patients while the air conditioning did not work.
Although the nursing home was shuttered following the incident and 245 employees were laid off, attorneys representing RCHH are still planning to appeal CMS' decision to terminate funding and impose a fine. A legal hearing is scheduled for Oct. 27.
CMS will continue to pay the rehab center through Nov. 12 for care provided to the residents prior to the evacuation and closure.
