Shreveport-based Christus Health Northern Louisiana donated their Shreveport, La.-based Schumpert Hospital campus to a nonprofit group that supports Louisiana State University Health Shreveport's mission of education, patient care and research.
The donation includes the18-acre hospital property that has been dormant since it closed in 2013, parking garage and several free standing medical offices surrounding the facility.
Christus Health additionally pledged $6.5 million to finance the initial operating and renovation costs.
"We are excited about this opportunity to help LSU Health Shreveport and our community, by donating the Schumpert campus so that it can become a vibrant focal point for medical training and health-related services," Stephen Wright, Christus' senior vice president for group operations, said. "The repurposing of this campus will contribute to neighborhood revitalization as well as improved health status of the community."
The nonprofit group that received the gift, Margaret Place Properties, was formed to help LSU Health Shreveport manage the donated facility to provide an efficient, cost-effective and integrated healthcare to residents in the area.
