California hospital considers layoffs amid projected $18.8M loss

Ventura (Calif.) County Medical Center managers are looking at employee layoffs to offset a projected $18.8 million loss for this fiscal year, according to the VC Star.

The medical center, a fully-integrated, comprehensive system featuring Ventura, Santa Paula (Calif.) Hospital and outpatient clinics, also is considering renegotiating insurance and supply deals and increasing efficiency of county clinics to cut costs.

"At this point, we are looking at all options," Bill Foley, director of the Ventura County Health Care Agency, told the VC Star.

Mr. Foley made a budget presentation to the Ventura County Board of Supervisors last month and said he would return to the board with more details.

The medical center's projected $18.8 million loss is partially due to fewer hospital patients and a delay in getting a purchasing contract to reduce supply costs, he told the board.

Officials are working on a financial improvement plan, and a newly hired CFO, as well as another administrator, will be helping with that effort, Mr. Foley told the VC Star.
