Downers Grove, Ill.-based Advocate Health Care provided $661 million in charitable care and community services in 2013.
That's $47 million more than the health system provided in 2012, according to a news release. Advocate administered just over $527 million in charity care and other uncompensated costs (e.g., discounted care for the uninsured and underinsured), in addition to spending $34 million on subsidized health services.
Furthermore, the system contributed $4 million to language assistance programs in 2013 and increased its provision of medical education and training to $82 million. Advocate also provided nearly $13 million in the form of contributions to other non-profit community organizations, volunteer work and in-kind donations of equipment, supplies and clinic space, according to the release.
In order to comply with Internal Revenue Code requirements to maintain federal tax-exemption, nonprofit hospitals and health systems must provide charity care to the extent of their financial ability.
