5 leading health insurers produce mixed results for Q2

For the second quarter of 2014, some of the leading health plans have produced varying results, with some showing losses and others posting significant gains.

Aetna, headquartered in Hartford, Conn., reported net income of $548.8 million, a 2.4 percent increase over the $536 million the company reported for the same quarter in 2013.

Aetna's second-quarter 2014 revenue was 14.5 billion, an increase of 26 percent from the second quarter of 2013.

Cigna, based in Bloomfield, Conn., reported net income of $573 million, a 13.4 percent increase over the $505 the company reported for the same quarter in 2013.

Cigna had total revenue of $8.73 billion, an increase of 9 percent from the second quarter of 2013.

Humana, headquartered in Louisville, Ky., reported net income of $344 million, down 18.1 percent from the corresponding period in 2013.

Humana had total revenue of approximately $12.22 billion, an increase of 18.4 percent from the second quarter of 2013.

UnitedHealth Group, based in Minneapolis, reported net income of $1.41 billion, down 2 percent from the corresponding period in 2013.

UnitedHealth Group had total revenue of $32.57 billion, an increase of 7 percent from the second quarter of 2013.

Wellpoint, headquartered in Indianapolis, reported net income of $731.1 million, down 8.6 percent from the corresponding period in 2013.

Wellpoint had total revenue of $18.47 billion, an increase of 4.4 percent from the second quarter of 2013.
