3 keys that drove MD Anderson to 4 consecutive MAP Award wins

Winning one MAP Award was always a goal for University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center Vice President of Revenue Cycle and Treasurer Brad Gibson. The Houston-based hospital recently won the award for the fourth consecutive time.

Mr. Gibson told Becker's that after the hospital implemented Epic and stabilized the platform, they wanted to go through a rigorous process like the Healthcare Financial Management Association's MAP award to see how it stacked up against others.

"We were thrilled to win in 2020 during the pandemic while we were all largely working from home," he said. "And then to have consecutive wins in a row is quite meaningful to us and our team."

Driving that success, first and foremost, is the people and the leadership approach, Mr. Gibson said.

"We've got the right team members in the right seats and we're all driving in a very defined direction of improvement," he said. "What we try to do is balance our patients and our employees. [That balance] is necessary to maintain our high engagement. MD Anderson goes through a process of measuring the engagement of our workforce and I am blessed to have such great people who are part of our success."

The second part of that success is having solid tools to work with.

"I'm a big fan of what Epic has done for the electronic medical record industry," Mr. Gibson said. "And we take that functionality and turn it on."

The third is putting in place processes for improvement.

"We go through some goal setting each year for continual process improvement and key results and we communicate that out to the 500 or so people who work for me and we basically key out eye on the target," he said. "We aim to deliver those results. So it's just great people, great tools and great processes for improvement."
