$285,000: The out-of-pocket healthcare costs retired couples could face

Couples could spend roughly $285,000 in out-of-pocket healthcare costs during retirement, according to a Fidelity Workplace Consulting report cited by Reuters.

Fidelity's estimate is based on Medicare premiums for adults age 65-plus. It also includes the deductibles and copays beneficiaries pay for medical services and prescriptions, as well as inflation and investment growth.

Broken down, a couple with a $1 million retirement budget would need to set aside about $5,000 per person each year to cover these healthcare costs, according to the report.

However, Fidelity's average spend doesn't include long-term care costs, as Medicare doesn't cover those expenses. The average cost of nursing care can be more than $80,000 per year, according to HHS' Administration on Aging data cited by Reuters. In addition, home healthcare costs can total $20 an hour.
