U of Michigan, St. Joseph Mercy in talks to build hospital

The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor is in talks with Saint Joseph Mercy Health System in Livonia, Mich., to bring a new hospital to the state, according to the Detroit Free Press, which cited internal emails it obtained.

If the plan advances as outlined in the emails, Michigan Medicine would be a co-owner and minority partner of the hospital in Livingston County. The hospital would be governed by Trinity Health, a Catholic-based health system in Livonia that owns 92 hospitals, including the Saint Joseph Mercy network.

The new hospital would add to the partnership between the two organizations. Michigan Medicine is already is a minority partner with Saint Joseph Mercy/Trinity Health in the ownership and operation of Saint Joseph Mercy Health System.

Saint Joseph Mercy Health told the Free Press, "Saint Joseph Mercy Health System and Trinity Health continually review opportunities that enable us to further our mission to provide exceptional, compassionate care within our communities."
