St. Mary Medical Center to launch expansion, modernization project after nearby hospital closure

Long Beach, Calif.-based St. Mary Medical Center, part of San Francisco-based Dignity Health, will expand its emergency department and build a modern patient tower — a move that comes after another Long Beach hospital closed July 3.

The revamped ED will house new trauma bays, and the patient tower will feature more operating rooms and labor and delivery suites.

The hospital will expand several service lines, including neurosciences, women's and children's health, orthopedics and cardiovascular services.

More details about the modernization are expected to be released after the planning phase is complete, a hospital spokesperson told Becker's Hospital Review.

"These exciting changes further support our mission to provide high quality healthcare services to the Long Beach community," said Carolyn Caldwell, medical center CEO and president.

The expansion comes after Community Medical Center Long Beach closed. It was unable to revamp the hospital to meet California's standards for resisting earthquakes.
