Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic has announced a slew of expansion projects during recent months, totaling $1 billion.
Officials said the goal of the expansion is to help patients in Rochester, Jacksonville, Fla., and Phoenix address their healthcare concerns and chronic conditions.
"Every year, millions of people from all over the world come to Mayo Clinic seeking expertise and answers they haven’t found anywhere else, and that number continues to grow," John Noseworthy, MD, president and CEO of Mayo Clinic, said in a Sept. 26 news release. "This significant investment will allow us to provide the highest-quality care for more patients from around the world now and for generations to come."
Here are three notes about Mayo Clinic's expansion plans:
1. Officials plan to invest $190 million in an 11-floor expansion to its Gonda Building in Rochester. Four floors will be designated as clinical spaces to accommodate patients. The remaining seven floors will be turned into a hotel space through a joint venture with Pontiac Land Group. Construction on the facility is slated to begin by the end of 2019 or early 2020, and is slated to be completed by the end of 2022.
2. Mayo Clinic's Florida campus will see a five-floor, 120,000-square-foot expansion, resulting in up to eight operating rooms and procedural space for other medical specialties. The additional clinic space is slated for completion in 2021. The project will also include a 1,000-space parking garage, which is expected to be completed in 2020.
3. An additional 1.4 million square feet of space is planned for the health system's Phoenix campus. The space will accommodate patient rooms, clinic and rehab space, and an outpatient surgical center. The area will also be used to expand the facility's emergency, laboratory medicine, radiology and pharmacy departments. Officials expect to open the space as early as June 2020, with the final phase opening in April 2023.
