The Minneapolis-based George Family Foundation has donated $5 million to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., for the creation of a new center that will take a highly personalized approach to women's health.
The Center for Women's Health will combine traditional medicine with integrative health and healing practices, according to Penny George, a co-founder of the namesake nonprofit organization alongside her husband, Bill. Treatment at the center will take into account patients' health needs, genetic traits, lifestyle and personal preferences, and will provide information, education and further consultations about health and wellness.
The new institute will also promote the study of how sex and gender affect health. Additionally, beyond its focus on women's health, the center will guide other Mayo Clinic departments as they add similarly personalized and holistic integrative health and lifestyle services to their own models of care.
"The Center for Women's Health will lead by example to set a new national standard for women's health care, providing personalized care that considers women as partners in their health care," Stephanie Faubion, MD, director of the center, said in a statement. "The center's goal is to become a destination for women's health care where patients are not only treated for a specific condition, but also empowered with the tools and knowledge they need to improve their overall health and wellness: mind, body and spirit."
