Massachusetts Public Health Council approved Boston-based North Shore Medical Center's scaled-back $168 million expansion at Salem (Mass.) Hospital, according to the Gloucester Times.
In 2016, North Shore Medical Center proposed a $180 million, 168-bed expansion that was approved by the council. Salem Hospital officials subsequently determined the facility did not need to add as many beds as it originally proposed.
The hospital reduced the number of new beds by 46, eliminated a plan for a modernized lobby and reduced the cost of the project by $12 million.
The hospital's decision to scale back the expansion project comes as North Shore Medical Center lost $50 million in 2016 and its parent organization Boston-based Partner's HealthCare lost more than $100 million, according to the report.
"We needed to get real with the amount of money we're spending," David Roberts, president of North Shore Medical Center said. "We've been going through some hard times."
The expansion project is underway and will still include a three-story addition and renovation of a hospital on the Salem campus.
